U.S. Congress plans to ban disposable toner / ink cartridges
The Los Angeles City Council asked city attorneys to work with the Department of Sanitation to draft an ordinance banning the use of disposable ink cartridges. It's part of Los Angeles' comprehensive Plastic Reduction Initiative, a city-wide effort to reduce plastic waste.
The plans include a ban on certain single-use plastic products, the introduction of a product stewardship scheme, and an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for high-impact items. These measures aim to reduce the use of single-use plastics by encouraging the production of more durable, reusable, repairable and recyclable products.
At a recent council meeting, Los Angeles specifically discussed a proposal to ban the distribution and sale of disposable toner/cartridges. The purpose of this proposal is to promote the use of recyclable or reusable alternatives to consumables to reduce the amount of consumables that end up in landfill.
It is worth noting that this environmental initiative is not the first of its kind in Los Angeles. The Balearic Islands have previously implemented a similar ban, and Catalonia this month announced plans to ban the use of disposable toner and ink cartridges by 2025. These actions demonstrate that more and more regions around the world are committed to reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable development.
